Common causes

  • Sudden diet change or eating rubbish
  • Stress
  • Intestinal parasites
  • Viral or bacterial infection
  • Food intolerance, pancreatitis or other illness

See a vet promptly if

  • There is blood, or black tarry stool
  • Your dog is also vomiting, weak or not eating
  • It lasts more than 24–48 hours
  • Your dog is a puppy, senior, or has a medical condition
Puppies with diarrhoea and vomiting can dehydrate quickly and may have parvovirus — see a vet the same day.

Home care for mild cases

For an otherwise bright adult dog, offer fresh water, small bland meals recommended by your vet, and monitor closely. Avoid human anti-diarrhoea medicines unless a vet prescribes them.

FAQ

Should I fast my dog?

Long fasting is no longer routinely recommended. Ask your vet; most dogs do better with small, easily digested meals.
