Normal drooling

Breeds with loose lips such as Saint Bernards and Mastiffs naturally drool, especially around food or after drinking.

Common medical causes

  • Dental disease, broken teeth or mouth ulcers
  • Something stuck in the mouth or throat
  • Nausea or car sickness
  • Toxins (e.g. toads, chemicals, certain plants)
  • Heatstroke
Sudden heavy drooling with panting, weakness, vomiting or seizures can be an emergency — see a vet immediately.

What you can check

Gently look for redness, a bad smell, tartar or a foreign object. Do not put your hand deep into the mouth of a distressed dog.

Prevention

Regular tooth brushing and annual dental checks help prevent painful dental disease, one of the most common causes of drooling.
